Foreword

Food and drink have more aspects to them than just the nutrition they provide us with – from packaging to prevent spoiling to appliances that allow us to transform foods. Such goods may be referred to as BBFCMs – biobased food contact materials – derived from both animal and plant-based sources, and often by-products of food and agriculture production processes. Because of the origin of their raw materials and their close relation to human consumption, strict regulations and resulting certifications are necessary to avoid risks associated with biotoxins, allergens, process contaminants and harmful nanomaterials.

In 2018, UK households produced 525,000 tonnes of predominantly fossil-based food packaging. Recently, scientists have created biodegradable food packaging from a corn protein named ‘Zein’. To extend food shelf life, this packaging contains natural antimicrobial oils that kill food-contaminating bacteria...
