Foreword
Biobased chemicals are chemical products derived wholly or partially
from biological sources, including fungi, algae, crops, trees, marine
organisms, and biological waste. They provide an alternative to conventional fossil derived chemicals.
Whilst biobased chemicals have found success in various industries,
like cosmetics, solvents, and adhesives; the majority of organic chemicals and
polymers still originate from fossil-based feedstocks, predominantly oil and
gas. Global petrochemical production of chemicals and polymers was estimated at
around 330 million tonnes in 2020 and is set to keep growing over the coming
years, with primary output focused on key building blocks such as methanol,
ethylene, propylene, butadiene, benzene, toluene, and xylene. These building
blocks serve as the basis for numerous polymers, plastics, and specialty
chemicals with unique functions.
However, factors such as consumer demand for eco-friendly goods, net
zero targets, and finite supplies of non-renewable resources have created new
prospects for biobased chemicals and polymers. Industry is increasingly considering
chemical and polymer production from renewable resources as an attractive
investment opportunity.
Recently, BASF signed
a long-term agreement to obtain biobased 1,4-butanediol (BDO) from Qore, a
joint venture of Cargill and HELM AG...
