Foreword
In October 2021, The International Air Transport Association (IATA),
a collective of 290 airlines representing over 80% of total air traffic, that
support aviation activity and inform policy creation, approved a resolution to
achieve net-zero carbon emissions in the global air transport industry by 2050.
According to IATA, SAF may account for 65% of the aviation industry’s carbon
reduction in 2050, equating to ~450 billion litres of global annual SAF
production, which would mean a staggering ~3600-fold SAF production increase
from current levels, by 2050. However, a mid-term target of 30 billion litres
by 2030 is seen as a ‘tipping point’ – if it can provide sufficient SAF
quantities at an affordable price.
One such contributor
is the recent release of the UK Government’s ‘Jet Zero Strategy’ – which looks
to achieve net zero for UK domestic aviation by 2040. The commitment focuses on
UK SAF scale-up, technology investments, carbon removal, and critical airspace modernisation,
with hope for the inclusion of mandated policy support. Further, the
Government’s first annual review of UK progress regarding their Transport
Decarbonisation Plan, highlights ‘advances in active travel and towards
sustainable aviation fuels’...
