Foreword
The European Court
of Auditors warned that the lack of foresight and a long-term perspective, the hefty
amounts of R&D funding required (exceeding €430 million between 2014-2020) and the high-cost constraints
associated with commercialisation, are painting a bleak picture for the future
of the Biofuels sector. However, investments for biofuels are still proceeding across
the European region.
In the UK, the latest
round of funding agreed under the Advanced Fuels Fund of the Department
for Transport (DfT) will provide £53m to support nine further projects to convert
waste materials and by-products into biofuels. Alfanar received £8.66m to
support the development of their Lighthouse Green
Fuels (LGF) advanced SAF project in their Teeside facility. LGF is thought to be the largest advanced SAF facility development in Europe.
Hutanbio also secured investment from the UK governments Clean Growth Fund to
accelerate the commercial use of its third generation HBx biofuel oil for use
in maritime applications.
As far as biofuel policy is concerned, the European
Commission has opened the long-awaited Union
Database for Biofuels (UDB) for online registration by biofuel operators. The
purpose of this database is to help ensure market transparency and traceability
in the supply chain for fuels reducing the risk of irregularities. The EU has also
recently initiated anti-dumping investigations related to Chinese biodiesel
imports. According to the EC, domestic producers have submitted evidence of biodiesel imports from
China entering the EU at artificially low prices, leading to a drop in domestic
production...
