Foreword
As the transportation world envisions a future with reduced
dependence on fossil fuels, cars may typically transition to batteries and
electric motors. However, with emerging technologies and innovation, the
internal combustion engine may yet have a future – as electrofuels, also known
as synthetic fuels or eFuels, may be a viable, climate-friendly alternative to
conventional transport fuels, to power trucks, planes, and ships. Utilising
water, carbon dioxide from the air, and electricity from renewable resources
for their production, eFuels can be implemented in existing transport
distribution networks and infrastructures.
In Finland, research
and technology company VTT has teamed up with refining giants Neste, to build a
pilot plant demonstration facility for eFuels production. It will involve
carbon capture, high-temperature electrolysis, and hydrocarbon synthesis, to
produce synthetic crude oil, of which Neste expects to receive 300 kg from the
demonstration, for further development into synthetic fuels...
