Foreword
Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is the accepted solution for
decarbonising the aviation sector – to help reduce the 2.5% of global CO2 emissions
overall, that aviation currently accounts for. This News Review sees another
month dominated by SAF, as companies escalate production and supply to meet
increasing SAF demand created by blending mandates. The EU’s Fit for 55 package for example, proposes that fuel suppliers should incorporate increasing
proportions of SAF into fuel blends – from 2% in 2025, slowly rising to 63% in
2050.
Virgin Atlantic have committed
to the use of 10% SAF by 2030. They have signed a supply deal with Neste for
2.5 million litres of neat SAF, to be delivered to London Heathrow by mid-2022.
Neste’s neat SAF, derived from residues and waste, can reduce GHG emissions by
80% in comparison to conventional fossil jet fuel. ExxonMobil will provide the
distribution...
