vehicles which produce tailpipe emissions. This decision locks the UK into EV
and hydrogen fuel cell technologies as it excludes biofuels and sustainable
synthetic fuels (e-fuels) which utilise existing internal combustion engine
technologies. In reality, there will remain a significant number of internal
combustion engine (ICE) vehicles running on liquid fuels both in the UK and
worldwide, beyond 2035, as early scrappage of these vehicles would come at a
high environmental cost. Therefore, it is important to consider biofuels and
synthetic fuels as a solution to cover the transition period.
