Foreword
In this month’s foreword we look at the latest developments in international trading of biodiesel and its feedstock and deployment trials.
In the UK, exports of used cooking oil (UCO) hit a six-month high in January, while imports fell slightly, according to the most recent report by Quantum Commodity Intelligence. Shipments to Belgium rose by 125% month-on-month (+160% YoY), while exports to the Netherlands experienced a steep increase too. Meanwhile, the Trade Remedies Authority (TRA) has launched an anti-dumping and countervailing investigation into US imports of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) biodiesel, following UK producers' concerns about market changes and potential competition with UK-produced biodiesel.
LKQ UK and Ireland, a provider of alternative and specialty car parts, is set to significantly reduce its annual carbon emissions by transitioning its Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) logistics fleet to low carbon HVO. This move, in addition to the 67 HGV already run on HVO, is anticipated to save over 4 thousand tonnes of CO2e per year. In Scotland, North Ayrshire Council has switched 36 refuse collection vehicles from diesel fuel to HVO. According to provisional estimates, there is potential for the council to prevent around 2.5 thousand tonnes of carbon emissions within a single year.
The British Royal Air Force (RAF) has proceeded to trial the use of HVO in ground logistics by squadrons of the RAF's Support Force...
