Foreword
1st generation (1G) bioethanol from sugar crops is a mature technology, used
globally, for biofuel production, providing benefits to the environment,
energy and food security. Renewable ethanol for fuel use offsets GHG emissions
from fossil fuels; produces important co-products such as animal feed and has
the potential to help decarbonise the aviation sector by replacing liquid
fossil fuels. 1G bioethanol continues to be deployed globally but increasingly
alongside 2nd generation (2G) bioethanol. Other technologies are
also developing in this sector increasing the importance of bioethanol further,
including converting ethanol to chemicals or to gasoline or kerosine
equivalents.
Shell has signed an agreement with Raizen in Brazil for
an expansion in 2G cellulosic bioethanol production with five new plants
producing cellulosic ethanol from sugarcane residues. This would bring the
total number of cellulosic ethanol plants owned by Raizen in Brazil to nine,
with Shell agreeing to offtake 3.2 billion litres of ethanol over the life of
the agreement...
