Foreword
Aviation accounts for a
relatively small share of global emissions (estimated around 2-3%) but is one
of the most challenging sectors to decarbonise. Sustainable Aviation Fuels
(SAF) emerge as a promising solution, capable of emitting up to 80% less carbon
dioxide than conventional jet fuel. These fuels can be sourced from various
feedstocks, including waste fats, oils and greases, municipal solid waste,
agricultural residues, and non-food crops grown on marginal land.
With the potential to contribute
around 65% of the emissions reduction required by aviation to reach net-zero in
2050, a substantial increase in SAF production is essential. The International
Air Transport Association (IATA) projects a need for nearly 450 billion litres
of SAF annually by 2050. The most significant acceleration in production is
expected in the 2030s as global policy support expands, SAF competitiveness against
fossil kerosene increases and credible industry offsets become scarcer. A crucial
element to consider in any effort to increase SAF production should be promoting
the development of new feedstocks to help reduce production costs and secure
adequate supply.
Encouragingly, SAF adoption in the aviation
sector is already on the rise, as evidenced by Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation's
recent milestone...
