Foreword
The decarbonisation of marine
transportation is gaining ground with a number of different bio-fuels under
consideration for deployment at various scales. At present, fossil derived
fuels dominate this sector with marine gas oil, marine diesel (distillate fuel)
and heavy fuel oils (residue fuel) widely used. Continued research and
development has brought a number of other alternative technologies towards
market with bio‑fuels (green methanol, biodiesel and green ammonia) amongst the
frontrunners for deployment at scale. Several technologies are under development
but not all are ready for rapid uptake.
