Foreword
Biofuel production is not progressing fast enough for the global
energy sector to reach net zero emissions of CO2 by 2050, according
to the latest update of the International Energy Agency’s Net Zero Roadmap,
with availability of feedstocks, and food and fertiliser prices posing substantial
challenges.
Currently, only 10 Exajoules (EJ)
of the estimated 100 EJ of total potential resource base of sustainable
bioenergy (solid, liquid and gaseous) are being utilised for biofuel production.
Biofuel production has increased by 4% per year over the last five years, but
it needs to expand by an annual average of 13% to reach the 11 EJ projected for
2030 in the Net Zero Emissions (NZE)
Scenario.
The future of biofuels
demand hinges on policy mandates. Whilst some policies are already in place,
there is a growing need for more, particularly in developing countries. Currently, over 80% of biofuels
consumption is concentrated in the United States, Brazil, Europe, and
Indonesia, where a combination of regulations, financial incentives, and
technical standards supports their expansion. In the US, the Federal Aviation
Administration recently announced nearly $300 million in funding for projects
to help achieve America’s goal of net-zero emissions from aviation by 2050 as
part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda...
