Foreword
According to Market Research Agency Technavio, the global
market for lignocellulosic-based feedstocks used in biofuel production is
projected to see significant expansion over the next four years. From 2024 to
2028, the market is anticipated to grow by USD 33.6 billion, with a compound
annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 50%. However, the report also
highlights that the complex and expensive nature of conversion processes could
create challenges in realising market potential.
This year, Topsoe has signed multiple agreements to supply
its HydroFlex™ technology, including partnerships with Swedish SAF producer
Preem and China’s first sustainable aviation fuel project with Guangxi Hongkun
Biomass. Most recently, Topsoe announced that Germany’s HOLBORN Europa
Raffinerie GmbH will also adopt this technology. HOLBORN is developing a
renewable fuels complex within its Hamburg refinery to produce Sustainable
Aviation Fuel (SAF) and Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO). Scheduled to be operational
by early 2027, the facility and its infrastructure will leverage waste and
residue feedstocks to produce approximately 220,000 tonnes per year of
renewable diesel and SAF.
Topsoe’s HydroFlex™ technology, developed over
the past decade, is engineered to offer flexibility in renewable oil selection.
HydroFlex operates in two distinct modes: sweet and sour. In sour mode, biomass
undergoes hydrodeoxygenation followed by dewaxing...
