Foreword

Worldwide synthetic chemical production is set to double within the next decade. It is argued that chemical pollution is having negative effect on environment and that it could also be one of the drivers of climate change. Among other leading international institutions, the Royal Society of Chemistry have set out to developing a strategy that will ensure that as the use of synthetic chemicals doubles, the resulting waste will not only not follow that trend, but will be reduced overall. Two of the four pillars upon which this strategy rests are “Innovation” and “Circular Economy”, showing that sustainable biobased chemicals are the way to go.

The Swedish chemical company Sekab has developed a technology to produce renewable chemicals using raw materials from the forest. The resulting chemicals can then be used to produce biofuels...
