Foreword

As 2021 draws to a close, we take a moment to reflect on another year of growth and innovation in the field of biobased products. After 2 years of Covid pandemic, it appears that despite production and supply chain delays, the world’s commitment to transitioning towards a biobased economy is not faulting. Therefore, related biobased markets – such as biobased polymers, biobased chemicals, and biobased consumer products – are growing and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

Biobased polylactic acid (PLA) is becoming a sought after plastic option for a range of industrial applications. It is in this context that leading PLA manufacturer NatureWorks is developing a range of biopolymers made from renewable sources such as sugar cane, cassava and beet. Nowadays, the company’s Ingeo polymers are used to manufacture food packaging, electronics, films and textiles. NatureWorks is therefore experiencing a rapid growth and announced in September that it would open a new plant in Thailand...
