Foreword 

As part of its efforts to reach a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, the EU is attempting to reorganise the aviation fuel landscape on the continent by pushing for the development of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and by making fossil-derived fuels less attractive.

As part of its ReFuelEU scheme, the EU proposed a new blending mandate stating that aircraft landing at EU airports would be required to use blended jet fuel with a mandated SAF share of 2% by 2025, 5% by 2030, 20% by 2035, 32% by 2040 and 63% by 2050. Synthetic aviation fuels, including hydrogen, would in response be expected to rise from a 0.7% share by 2030 to 11% by 2045 and 28% by 2050...
