Foreword

In 2018, 65% of all palm oil imported by Europe was used for energy purposes. About 12% of that share was used in electricity and heating, while 53% was used for the production of biodiesel for road transport. The rest was used for food and animal feed production. However, concerned NGO’s point to the potential detrimental environmental impacts of palm oil production which, when plantations and sourcing are poorly managed, lead to unchecked deforestation, soil degradation, and habitat and diversity loss in chasing these market opportunities.

As a result of the difficulty in accurately identifying the global impacts of biofuel sourcing on the environment, the newly revised European Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) has opted to limit the use of biofuels from food-crops
