Foreword
By far the biggest news of recent weeks, as far as biofuels
are concerned, has been the publishing of the European Union’s revised
Renewable Energy Directive (RED II). Setting out legally-binding targets for
members states’ renewable energy, and the terms therein. It is one such term
that has been the source of much debate, not just in recent weeks, but for a long
time now: palm oil. One of the biggest
criticisms of so-called “first generation” biofuels – those produced directly
from crops or forest biomass – is that their production results in Indirect
Land Use Change (ILUC). ILUC is the theory that any land allocated for
producing biomass for biofuels, when it would otherwise be used for growing
crops, results in additional land being cleared elsewhere. It is.........
