Foreword 

The UK government has released its provisional report on renewable fuel statistics for 2020, the final report being due in November 2021. Key figures estimate that 6% of all road and non-road fuel used was made up of renewable fuels, amounting to 2,537 million litres of fuel in total. As much as 91% of this share has been verified under the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation, therefore meeting the scheme’s sustainability criteria. Thanks to this, there has been an estimated 83% greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions saving for use of this renewable fuel volume compared to conventional fossil fuel use. This figure drops down to a 78% GHG emissions saving when indirect land-use change (ILUC) is included in the GHG saving criteria assessment. Overall, biodiesel made up 61% of the verified renewable fuel used, while bioethanol made up 23%. Finally, waste feedstocks served as raw materials for 76% of the verified renewable fuel.

Consumption of renewable fuels is expected to increase significantly over the coming years as nations establish further GHG emissions saving schemes and renewable energy support schemes. A few months back, the UK government announced its intention to bring forward...
