Foreword

Industrial manufacturing plants for food and beverages have increasingly been employing on site renewable energy generation, using the biogenic waste products of the manufacturing process to reduce the amount of waste produced and therefore cost of waste disposal, while increasing economic resilience and reducing the environmental footprint of the production plant. Anaerobic digestion is the main technology through which companies are valorising their biogenic waste streams, through production of biogas which can be converted into useful heat and electricity, or upgraded to biomethane and used directly as a transport fuel or injected into the national gas grid for use elsewhere. Anaerobic digestion also produces digestate as a by-product which can be used as an alternative to fertiliser which can further increase resilience, generate income and reduce emissions linked to fertilisers.

Anaergia and Pepsico have entered into a partnership to convert food, oil and wastewater sludge into biogas, which will be used to power...
