Foreword
As a growing number of companies
commit to various decarbonisation solutions, renewable natural gas (RNG) could
play an increasingly important role in different sectors.
Renewable natural gas, also
known as biomethane or green gas, represents a remarkable intersection of
sustainable energy and waste management. RNG is produced by capturing,
upgrading, and utilising methane produced from the decomposition of organic
materials, such as food waste, agricultural residues, manure, landfill waste and
sewage. RNG’s benefits are two-fold: it helps reduce harmful greenhouse gas
emissions by repurposing waste that would otherwise decay and release methane,
a potent greenhouse gas, while simultaneously providing a clean energy source. RNG
is seeing increased uptake across various sectors, from transportation to
industry, where it is replacing conventional natural gas.
In Spain, oil company Cepsa set an ambitious
roadmap to cut its CO2 emissions by 55% by 2030 (Scope 1 and
2) compared to 2019, and aims to be carbon neutral by 2050, which will require the use
of biomethane in its industrial processes...
