Foreword
Compostable packaging is that which will biodegrade in
certain conditions, either in a home composter or in industrial composting
conditions. Compostable packaging innovations have the potential to help alleviate
some of the problems associated with plastics that don’t biodegrade – their
disposal and intended end-of-life helps to prevent the degradation of the
natural environment. However, in practise, the compostable packaging industry hasn’t
really been fully optimised. For one, the increase in compostable packaging
available hasn’t been met with an appropriate scale up of facilities able to collect
compostable waste. Secondly, there is quite often confusion between home
compostable and industrially compostable, and often, the generic label ‘compostable’
