The ‘Biomethane RTFC calculator’ has been developed to enable a comparison of the level of support received for biomethane claimed as a transport fuel under the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) against biomethane receiving support under the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). The tool calculates the equivalent per kWh ‘subsidy’ under the RTFO based on a user input RTFC value, accounting for current levels of support; biomethane from crop feedstock is rewarded 1.9 RTFCs per kg and biomethane from waste is rewarded 3.8 RTFCs per kg. The tool then compares the estimated level of support to current and historical RHI tariff levels for Tier I, Tier II and Tier III gas.
