Foreword
Underpinning the modern
transition into more sustainable production and consumption of goods and
services, lies the concept of circular economy: that once something has been
used, it needn’t “drop-out” of the economy, and instead can be re-used to
continue to generate value. Waste management has become one of the significant
issues in the transition to a circular economy, as repurposing and recycling of
waste is the preferred way to derive continued value from waste. Duly,
recycling and waste management have been under policy scrutiny in recent years,
and the UK government has now published its eagerly-awaited Resources &
Waste Strategy. As is to be expected from such a strategy, the overwhelming
focus is on the development of a more robust recycling ecosystem in the UK. It
notes that currently there is inconsistency in how recyclable waste is handled
around the UK, and the Strategy strives for consistency in such matters. As far
as the bioeconomy is concerned, there is big change with regard to.........
