Foreword
Carbon capture and storage from biomass energy generation (BECCS) can
be viewed as a means of negative carbon emissions. The typical process, after
biomass combustion, involves isolating CO2 from flue gases using a
solvent. This CO2 is then pressurised or liquefied for
transportation, before being permanently injected and sequestered into porous
rock formations. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change suggest BECCS
implementation in three out of their four model pathways aimed at limiting
global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. To achieve net-zero
emissions by 2050, the UK Government has plans for large scale BECCS
deployment, including a target of 5 million tonnes of annual CO2 removal through BECCS and direct air capture by 2030.
To aid the UK’s
energy progression, the Government has recently launched an investment package
for innovative energy technologies. Within this, some £5 million of funding is
allocated to CCS technologies to accelerate its research, development, and
deployment. Furthermore, the UK Government is looking to launch the Future
System Operator (FSO)...
