Foreword

The Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) has written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves MP, to point out that the UK's anaerobic digestion (AD) sector is facing significant challenges. In their letter, they highlight that several plants are closing and others are at risk of shutting down, potentially threatening over 2TWh of renewable electricity by 2030. The sector produces over 13TWh of biogas and 7TWh of renewable gas, contributing to clean power objectives and supporting small businesses, farms, and communities. However, they argue that lack of support for the clean power sector makes these targets difficult to maintain.

ADBA requests that the government treat biomethane equally with other renewables under the UK Emissions Trading Scheme and establish suitable support schemes to replace existing tariffs and certificates prior to their expiration date. Finally, it believes that biomethane production deserves more recognition for its contribution UKs national energy infrastructure. As highlighted in their recent net zero study, supporting AD means a reduced need for over-capacity in intermittent renewables, lower energy transmissions costs through the use of existing gas grid, and a lower demand for expensive green hydrogen.

Similar opinions are being echoed by experts in Brussels for Europe’s biomethane industry. The Grid Ready Forum, a focused and expert-driven event, has recommended accelerating biomethane injection into Europe's gas grids to boost energy security...
