Foreword
Within the UK’s Hydrogen Strategy published in August 2021, it states
low carbon hydrogen will be vital in achieving net-zero, and by 2050, hydrogen
could account for up to 35% of final UK energy consumption. The Department for
BEIS analysis suggests, with considerable uncertainty due to numerous
assumptions, that biomass gasification with CCS could provide up to 20% of
total hydrogen production in 2050 in the UK. Further, the UK’s Net-Zero
Strategy contains the goal of annually removing 5 million tonnes of CO2 through BECCS and direct air capture by 2030; and recent government activity
shows development and support in all areas aforementioned.
BEIS has recently
provided funding totalling £5 million, across over 20 companies – either
start-ups or small/medium enterprises – to allow them to build robust proposals
for creative, commercially viable hydrogen BECCS technologies, under Phase 1 of
the Hydrogen BECCS Innovation Programme. The proposed solutions fall under
three categories: feedstock pre-processing, gasification components, and novel
biohydrogen technologies...
