Foreword
Decarbonisation measures in
Europe are being accelerated, mainly driven by the target of achieving at least
42.5% of energy from renewables by 2030. This, together with the increase in
natural gas prices, is drawing attention to the growing biomethane sector which
has the potential to address both of these challenges.
The European Biogas Association
(EBA)'s latest Statistical Report reveals a record €316 billion spent on gas
imports in 2022 and in 20 EU Member States, dependency on natural gas imports
went from 83% in 2021 to 97% in 2022. This clearly highlights the importance of
renewable gases produced within Europe. Biomethane production in Europe
witnessed a remarkable 20% growth in 2022 compared to the previous year,
aligning with the REPowerEU plan's target of 35 bcm by 2030. With positive
developments in Member States and industrial advancements, Europe's combined
biogas and biomethane production reached 21 bcm in 2022.
The European Commission's approval of a €2.4
billion Czech scheme to support the construction and operation of new or
converted sustainable biomethane production plants further demonstrates a
commitment to reaching the 35 bcm biomethane target...
