Foreword
The UK government has recently released a ‘Clean Power 2030 Action Plan’ which sets out a pathway to a clean electricity system and describes the steps it will take to assist the timely delivery of new infrastructure. The plan highlights that for immature technologies such as hydrogen-to-power and power bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) delivering new capacity for 2030 is likely to be challenging with longer lead-times mainly due to lack of appropriate infrastructure including the availability of transport and storage infrastructure for hydrogen and CO2 respectively.
Nevertheless, the association for renewable energy and clean technology (REA) has recently published their annual “REview” report which highlighted that bioenergy is now the second biggest contributor to renewable power generation within the UK, occupying 11% of the total share in 2023. Renewable energy now provides nearly half of the UK's electricity at 47%, up 32% from 15% a decade ago. This form of renewable energy includes Energy from Waste (EfW), biomass power and anaerobic digestion (AD). Growth in EfW alone has been significant, increasing by 42% over the past five years. According to the report, the transport and heating sectors, where renewables only make up 6.6% and 9.4% of demand, respectively, require a faster adoption of renewable energy.
Michael Shanks MP, energy minister for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), has commented on the importance of these results in demonstrating that the
government's clean power mission is not only the best long-term option for our nation...
