Foreword
Hydrogen can be
used as a fuel and this presents opportunities to decarbonise the electricity,
transport and domestic heating sectors as well as applications which require
extensive heat input i.e. steel and cement production. Hydrogen can be made
using a number of processes with different environmental impacts and costs. Hydrogen
from electrolysis i.e. wind and solar energy (green hydrogen) is currently the
most mature technology in the market. In comparison, hydrogen production from
biomass is still at pilot scale, but has the potential to provide negative net
emissions through Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS). Regardless
of production methodology, it is necessary to provide the infrastructure to
handle the fuel efficiently and safely, as industrial production is accelerated
from current levels. It is also important to consider how hydrogen production,
distribution and use will align with or impact on other fuel and energy
production pathways.
Plug Power and Johnson Matthey (JM) have
announced a partnership to provide
services to the green hydrogen production sector. JM are a leading producer of
catalysts and membranes for the production of...
