Foreword
IEA’s latest
medium-term forecast has revealed that demand for natural gas is expected to
slow down within the next four years. The report highlights that mature markets
are turning to renewable resources due to an accelerated rollout of these
alternatives and improved energy efficiency. Specifically for Europe, the loss
of piped gas from Russia, following its invasion of Ukraine, pressed
governments to seek alternative solutions to maintain energy security.
Nonetheless, most EU member states have mentioned in their National Energy and Climate
Plans (NECPRs), that they have included measures to promote biogas and
biomethane. Biomethane production in Europe grew by almost 20% in 2022 compared
to the previous year, according to the latest edition of the EBA Statistical
Report, and growth is set to continue in coming years as the
REPowerEU initiative continues to build. Notable growth is occurring in Denmark,
where an increase in the share of biomethane in their gas supply from 40% to
100% is planned by 2030. Additionally, the European Commission has recently approved
€140m state aid to support Portugal’s biomethane and hydrogen production.
According to EBA, despite such ambitions,
the Gas Regulation has missed an opportunity to set the bar higher for the
remaining EU member states as lawmakers dropped out of the EU biomethane
desired target, as outlined by the European Parliament...
