Foreword

According to the latest version of the European Biomethane map, Europe has reached an installed capacity of 6.4 billion cubic meters (bcm) of biomethane per year. This is apparently the combined capacity of a total 1,548 biomethane plants, representing a 32% increase in comparison to the Biomethane Map of 2022-2023. More than 80% of the reported biomethane plants are now connected to the gas grid, with almost half of them (49%) linked to the distribution grid (supplying homes, businesses and industrial gas users) and 14% to the transmission grid (a high-pressure grid transporting gas over long distances) supplies gas from the gas processing plant and transports it to LNG storage units and large gas companies).

France is considered to be a leader in the scale up of biomethane production, as it has nearly doubled its capacity within 2 years. Italy has also shown significant growth, increasing its number of plants four-fold and its total plant capacity more than threefold. United Kingdom and Denmark keep their positions among the five most productive biomethane industries in Europe. Although Germany still tops the list, it has currently paused the construction of new plants.

Following Botswana’s agreement with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to launch a comprehensive biogas program in 2019, the government has recently released its ambitious goals for the next two years.
