Foreword

The UK government has recently opened a consultation to gather information, data and
views in relation to the development of a sustainable biomethane sector in Northern Ireland.
The main target of this call for evidence is to develop an effective policy framework which
will fully unlock the potential of an economically viable biomethane industry without the
need for long-term subsidies. The call for evidence is seeking information on a range of
issues including the following: assessing the potential of biomethane industry in the path to
net zero energy; how to efficiently manage the feedstocks required to ensure a sustainable
supply for biomethane production; evaluation of the economic viability of local biomethane
production and assess costs related to connecting biomethane production sites to the gas
network.

In a recent Bioenergy Insight Thorsten Holl, CEO and managing director of VORN Bioenergy, was interviewed to discuss the major challenges facing the bioenergy sector. VORN Bioenergy is a German biomethane producer with extensive experience in project testing and development. Holl highlighted the lack of regulatory harmonisation as an important issue. ‘Regulatory frameworks across Europe are currently not yet unified’, he said and proceeded to add that ‘harmonising regulations and standards across Europe is essential for a stable biomethane landscape, ensuring market integrity and traceability from origin to usage’. Moreover, he argues that costs related to CO2 abatement and compensation projects should eventually drop so that they facilitate a smoother transition from fossil gas to biomethane. He ultimately concluded that these changes would necessitate adjustments in the political framework.
