Foreword
Bioenergy with carbon capture
and storage (BECCS) stands at the forefront of innovative solutions in the
quest for sustainable energy and climate change mitigation. BECCS involves
capturing and permanently storing CO2 from processes where biomass
is converted into fuels or directly burned to generate energy. Because plants
absorb CO2 as they grow, this is a way of removing CO2 from the atmosphere. This dual functionality transforms BECCS into a versatile
approach, capable of reducing carbon footprints while contributing to
sustainable energy portfolios. Various BECCS pathways and technologies are
currently under development, with diverse methods for CO2 collection
and sequestration.
An example is Carbon Capture
Scotland (CCSL)'s technology to capture and repurpose green carbon dioxide (biogenic
CO2) emitted from its biomethane plants in the UK. This venture
showcases the practical application of BECCS in diverse industries, producing
sustainable fuel feedstock, dry ice for commercial use in the food, cold
logistics and pharmaceutical industries and for carbon removal, via
sequestration, purposes. Iona Capital has recently announced it has taken a
stake in CCSL, aligning activities of the two businesses to further develop the
sector.
Despite the promising aspects of BECCS, concerns have arisen, some of which have been highlighted by the Lifescape Project rewilding charity...
