Foreword
The
price of natural gas remains at higher than average levels and demand shows
little inclination to reduce as cooler
winter temperatures approach. In addition to the high demand, storage is also
at a lower than usual level for October. The impact of high prices and supply
constraints will be felt widely across Europe and the US who are still heavily reliant on natural gas for domestic heating, despite
attempts to decarbonise the sector. Over the longer term, gas prices are forecast
to ease throughout 2023, as domestic production is ramped up to meet the current
demand.
In the UK, policies have been introduced to reduce the reliance of the
domestic heat market on fossil fuels, primarily to decarbonise the sector. One of the policies is the Boiler Upgrade
Scheme (BUS) which has encouraged a transition towards air source heat pumps
(ASHP), ground source heat pumps (GSHP), or biomass boilers, through the award of
grants for the installation of equipment. Figures from the start of the scheme,
between May 2022 and the end of July 2022 reveal...
