Each month we review the latest news and select key announcements and commentary from across the biobased products sector.

Foreword

This month sees the effort to reduce single-use plastics continue, with supermarkets in particular coming under increased pressure to eliminate unnecessary and difficult to recycle packaging. While some say single-use food packaging is unavoidable, poor labelling and black PET containers exacerbate the problem and the organisation Which? has found that only 52% of supermarket packaging can be easily recycled. Although it’s not all bad news. ALDI has announced they are launching a trial of paper and compostable carrier bags in all of its UK stores, and those responsible for 85% of plastic packaging sold through supermarkets have signed up to achieve the four UK Plastics Pact targets by 2025. To achieve these targets, we must increase our rate of recycling, reduce our consumption and look for alternatives – which could see the use of compostable packaging increase. As part of the UK Plastic Pact, a report commissioned by BBNET highlights how compostable packaging also presents an opportunity to substitute durable plastics. Drax also makes an appearance in our Biobased Products edition, making news as it........
