Each month we review the latest news and select key announcements and commentary from across the bioenergy sector.

Foreword

A huge amount of the UK’s energy is used in homes and businesses. Cutting the carbon emissions of energy supplied to the UK’s households and businesses will be a big step towards the UK’s net-zero goals and hopefully have the added benefit of cutting costs for the consumer. Some recently announced funding will mean the UK takes steps in this direction. £70 million is to be spent on technologies for low-carbon energy production plants, which includes hydrogen and wind. In addition, £20 million will be spent on ‘smart energy’ projects which focuses on local renewable sources of energy. Working to reduce carbon at a local scale means that communities adopt renewable energy most suited to the area. Examples where this funding will go towards include Rugeley, where geothermal power will be derived from local canals and disused mineshafts, and Coleraine, where wind power will provide all the energy for a small group of 100 homes.
For homeowners wishing to use renewable energy in their homes.........
