Foreword

Getting yourself outdoors for some fresh air during this time of the year might be particularly daunting to some – currently in York it’s cold and windy, and the nights are still relatively long. But for those of us who enjoy getting out in the elements, and have an interest in the bioeconomy too, perhaps could get excited about two new biobased developments this month. Firstly, a biobased running shoe from Reebok. It’s claimed to outstrip other such items that merely look good without matching the performance of petroleum-based footwear, which would make it a much-preferred option for those who wish to support biobased products. The second is a down jacket from Moncler which is made from biobased materials and is carbon neutral. This is because the emissions generated during its production are offset through certified projects which look to preserve the Amazon rainforest, a huge carbon sink.
